THE STORY OF FLAX

Since ancient times, flax has been cultivated in Sūduva, giving rise to long-standing flax-growing and linen-making traditions. Today, flax is rarely grown, many traditions have been forgotten, and the related work processes and tools are no longer widely known. Many people have never seen flax plants or the products made from them.

The aim of this programme is to revive flax-growing traditions and to introduce participants to the cultivation and processing of flax, the raw materials involved, and their uses. Students can not only observe these processes, but also try them firsthand: working with flax combs, scutching and breaking tools, learning to weave on looms, twisting rope from tow, and creating art pieces from flax fibres, among other activities.

This programme complements school curricula in history, natural sciences, and ethnocultural studies.
